Vision Pro is Apple’s long-rumored augmented reality (AR) headset, announced at the WWDC 2023 conference. It is packed with technology, including a new operating system called visionOS. The device has a chassis that resembles high-end ski goggles, with a tinted, continuous front panel that acts as a lens and conceals a fan that cools the electronics. It has a “light seal” to keep ambient light out.
Vision Pro has two displays, one for each eye, with a total of 23 million pixels. It also has built-in earbuds that support features like Dolby Atmos and lossless audio. Zeiss has partnered with Apple to create magnetic lenses for prescription wearers.
The device uses IR cameras to track a wearer’s eyes and downward-facing cameras on the exterior of the chassis to track hand movements. It also has lidar sensors to sense objects and people around the headset.
Vision Pro has 23 sensors in total, including a dozen cameras, five sensors, and six mics. These sensors feed into the R1, a new Apple-originated chip designed to eliminate lag and stream images to the headset’s display eight times faster than the blink of an eye.
Vision Pro has a new app store launching simultaneously with the headset, featuring around 600 apps that have been updated for the device. It also includes native Apple apps upgraded to take advantage of the headset’s immersive capabilities.
The device also has a new format called Immersive Video, which features 180-degree 3D 8K recordings captured with spatial audio. Immersive Video content, including movies and TV shows, will be available on the Vision Pro from Apple and third parties.
Vision Pro’s EyeSight feature is designed to help users stay connected to the people around them by projecting a virtual version of the wearer’s face onto the device’s external display.
